Biochar
POWERING THE WORLD FOR GOOD
US, SOUTH CAROLINA
THE PROBLEM
Global climate change, drought and increasing temperatures are causing water instability
Fertilizer costs have quadrupled. Supply is limited due to war in Ukraine and global logistics problems
Land degradation caused by overuse of chemical fertilizers and pesticides
Lack of affordable carbon capture technologies and disorganized CO2 reduction incentives
THE SOLUTION
POWERING THE WORLD FOR GOOD
- The use of Biochar can save farmers more than 50% of the water they use today, reducing their overall costs while saving the world’s most valuable resource – water.
- Biochar increases agricultural productivity and crop yields, reduces bioavailability of environmental contaminants and creates a sustainable bio economy.
- Biochar manufacturing is carbon negative as there is more carbon being removed from the atmosphere than is released
- Biochar reduces soil nutrient loss and enhances soil quality, sequestering atmospheric carbon and increasing soil fertility.
What is Biochar?
- Biochar is a carbon-rich, charcoal-like material made from biomass (e.g. plant residues, agricultural waste or plants like Kenaf) using a high-heat, low oxygen process called pyrolysis.
- Biochar supplies nutrients such as phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen and others – required for healthy plant growth.
What is Kenaf?
Kenaf is a plant of the mallow family that yields a fiber similar to jute. It has many qualities that makes Kenaf ideal for biomass feedstock, including:
- Grows rapidly – up to 25 fee in in 4 months
- Grows in many regions
- Requires little fertilizer and little water
- Is a Green, renewable feedstock
PROJECT SNAPSHOT AT A GLANCE
Biochar will create both short and long-term transformation of the region’s renewable energy, recycling, economic, and environmental goals.
